D- Empty is the World

01/10/2010 13:18

Insofar as it is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self: Thus it is said, Ananda, that the world is empty. And what is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self?

The eye is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self. Forms... Eye-consciousness... Eye-contact is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self. Whatever feeling arisises with eye contact as condition, whether pleasant, or unpleasant, or neither pleasant nor unpleasant – that too is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self.

The ear is empty...

The nose is empty...

The tongue is empty...

The body is empty...

The mind is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self. Mental phenomena... Mind-consciousness... Mind-contact is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self. Whatever feeling arisises with mind contact as condition, whether pleasant, or unpleasant, or neither pleasant nor unpleasant – that too is empty of a self or of anything pertaining to a self.

It is, Ânanda, because it is empty of self or of anything pertaining to a self, that it is said that the world is empty.
